Old Man of Hoy, Cliffs of Hoy

An Orcadian icon, the Old Man of Hoy is the reason many climbers visit Orkney.

Live It!

At 137m (or 450 feet in old money), the Old Man of Hoy is the UK's most famous sea stack. It stands on Hoy, an island separate from the mainland of Orkney.  There are seven routes of differing difficulty for experienced climbers to take on the Old Man. Of course, you can just admire the view from the north slopes of Rackwick Bay.

Although there is more than one route to Hoy, the easiest access is via the ferry from Stromness to Moaness. From here a route can be started to climb the cliffs of Hoy. If travelling by car (or a local taxi) it can be shortened by driving to Rackwick.

The Old Man of Hoy is just one of the surprises you can expect in Orkney and Shetland. Click on the links to the left for even more.
