The Scots really get involved with their culture and heritage. After all, it’s a matter of national pride.

Live It!

For one of the world’s smaller countries, Scotland certainly packs in a lot of iconic images that just sing out ‘Scotland’! Pipers at the Edinburgh Tattoo, Eilean Donan Castle set against a perfectly still loch, a kaleidoscope of tartans at Highland Games: all unmistakeably Scottish. From mist-edged mountains and glens to coastal fishing villages like Crail, different aspects of Scotland unfold the further you explore.

The cities, too, have their own proud heritage. Look out in Glasgow for buildings and works by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, the designer and architect renowned for his distinctive style. Edinburgh is party central when it comes to festivals, starting and ending the year with huge street parties for Edinburgh’s Hogmanay. It hosts festivals to all manner of culture the rest of the year as well.

Tie in your visit with an event for a real feel for the passion of the occasion. Shetland acknowledges its Viking influence with Up Helly Aa, Europe’s largest fire festival towards the end of January each year. The burning of a replica Viking galley ship is the grand finale to the event.

Wherever you choose to visit, from the rugged islands of the west coast to the lush forests of Perthshire, you’ll be in no doubt you’re in Scotland! Follow the links on the left to find a part of Scotland that stirs your passion for travel.
