Live It!
Scotland’s coastal waters are well-known in surfing circles for their amazing waves. The Highland Open Surf Contest on the Pentland Firth near Thurso is a key date for surf fans. The Moray Firth and beyond is a favourite place to spot dolphins close to shore. You can book yourself on to one of the many boats that cruise alongside for an even closer look.
On land, there are some fantastic signposted and mapped walks, to be enjoyed at leisure or against the clock in local races. Summer months see Highland Games dominate the scene, with dancers, pipers and athletes competing for more than cups and glory. The Braemar Highland Gathering is perhaps the most famous, but you’ll find the same competitive edge at even the smaller events.
Large-scale outdoor gigs with headline acts and famous DJs fill the normally tranquil summer glen around Loch Ness with monster music sounds. You’ll find music wherever you go in the Highlands, from pipers and ceilidh bands to local musicians just jamming in the pub. Find out all about it with the links on the left.
